THE CHRISTMAS BATTLE: A Poem

A creative work by Jim Hull

I REALLY THOUGHT I HAD MORE TIME

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S HERE

TELL ME WHERE THE TIME HAS GONE

IT CAN’T BE ALMOST A YEAR

I’D BETTER GET INTO CHRISTMAS MODE

THERE’S THINGS THAT MUST BE DONE

GOTTA FIND ALL THE DECORATIONS

ON THE LIST , THAT’S NUMBER ONE

NOW! WHERE’D I PUT THOSE FAIRY LIGHTS??

I THINK THEY’RE IN THE LOFT

NO THEY’RE NOT IN THE BOX WITH POWER PACK

I THINK MY MEMORY HAS GONE SOFT

SANTAS CUT OUT NEEDS A COAT OF PAINT

THE REINDEERS LOOK A BIT SAD

RUDOLPH’S NOSE HAS FALLEN OFF

BUT WE’LL FIX IT ---ITS NOT TOO BAD

WHAT ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS TREE ?

OH NO! A MOUSE HAD HAD A CHEW

IT LOOKS RATTY, I THINK IT’S PAST IT

WE’LL HAVE TO SHOP FOR ONE THAT’S NEW

I’VE FINALLY FOUND THE FAIRY LIGHTS

HALF THE GLOBES DON’T WORK

THE BATTERY IN THE TESTER IS FLAT

I THINK I’LL GO BESERK

THE CABLES GOT ALL TANGLED UP

TO WORK IT OUT WILL TAKE SOME TIME

IT’S WORSE THAN WHEN YOU TAKE KIDS FISHING

AND THEY GET A TANGLE IN THE LINE

TIME TO MOW THE LAWN AND TRIM THE HEDGE

SO THE DECORATIONS CAN BE SEEN

THE NEIGHBOUR’S PUTTING UP LIGHTS TOO

BUT WE DON’T WORK AS A TEAM

A LITTLE FRIENDLY COMPETITION

GOES ON BETWEEN ME AND HIM

LAST YEAR HE HAD A LOT MORE LIGHTS

BUT THIS YEAR I’M GONNA WIN!

THE LIGHTS ARE UP ---- WE TURN THEM ON

EIGHT HUNDRED LIGHTS AROUND THE DOOR

I’VE GOT TWELVE HUNDRED ON THE ROOF

BUT I THINK HE’S STILL GOT MORE

IT’S LIKE CHRISTMAS WITH THE GRISWALDS

WHO’LL BE THE FIRST TO BLOW A FUSE?

ONE OF US WILL SOON FIND OUT

JUST HOW MANY LIGHTS WE USE

SOON THE BATTLE WILL BE OVER

GOOD OLD SANTA WILL HAVE BEEN

THE KIDS WILL BE TIRED, BUT HAPPY

IN ALL ---- A PEACEFUL SCENE

THEN TO PACK THE STUFF ALL UP AGAIN

WORK OUT A NEW PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR

I’VE GOT TO BEAT THE BLOKE NEXT DOOR!

HE SAYS I OWE HIM A BEER
